Durham Man Crushed To Death by Tractor
Jim Hatley Killed Instantly, Monday Afternoon When Tractor Overturned Backward On Him
Jim Hatley, who resides northeast of Durham was killed instantly about 4 o'clock Monday afternoon when a tractor overturned backward on him. According to the information available, Mr. Hatley was harrowing with the use of the tractor. Mrs. Hatley had gone to the field with him but remained at the end of the field. Mr. Hatley drove the tractor over a knoll out of sight. She heard the tractor stop, then start up, then did not hear it again. She went to see what the trouble was and found the tractor overturned backward and Mr. Hatley pinned beneath it. She summoned help and when he was removed from beneath the tractor it was found that Mr. Hatley's chest had been caved in, and it was thought that death was immediate.
Mr. Hatley had resided in the Durham community for the past forty years. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Ima Kelly of Estancio, New Mexico.

James Stockes Hatley was born March 30, 1833 at Harper, Texas, and moved to this state in 1897 and to the Durham community in 1905.
He married Miss Iva Cozart February 22, 1905 and to this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Ima Gene Kelley of Estancia, New Mexico. Later he was married to Miss Lillie Eakins and to this union one daughter, Wanda Lee, was born May 25, 1942 and preceded him in death.
He departed this life June 15, 1942, aged 59 years, 2 months and 15 days.
Besides his widow and daughter, Ima Gene, and one grandson, Jimmy Dale Kelley, he leaves to mourn his passing four brothers, Tom of San Diego, California, Walter of Pearce Arizona, Henry of Durham, Ell of Robert Lee, Texas; six sisters, Mrs. Mamie Sparks of Amarillo, Texas, Mrs. Agnes Trent of Hammon, Oklahoma, Mrs. Belle Hughes of Higgins, Texas, Mrs. Betty Porter of Durham, Oklahoma, Mrs. Ethel Reizer,Harper, Texas and Mrs. Golda Smith, Robert Lee, Texas and other relatives and a host of friends.
