G.D. O'Brien Was Sargeant of Police
George D. O'Brien, 71, of 43 Griffin St., retired sergeant in the Springfield detective bureau, died Monday in Wesson Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Haydenville, May 30, 1900, son of the late Murtie and Alice (Riley) O'Brien. He was appointed to the Springfield Police Department July 19, 1923 and was promoted to sargeant on Sept. 7, 1948. He retired Feb. 8, 1945.
During his 30 year career, he was the recipient of five commendations. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association and the Retired Police and Firefighters Association of Massachusetts.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary K. (Heffernan) O'Brien; a daughter, Mrs. Edward D. Brennan of Holyoke, and a sister, Miss Helen O'Brien of Haydenville.
The funeral will be Thursday morning at the Liberty Street parlors of T.P. Sampson Co. with a liturgy of Christian burial in Our Lady of Hope Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Northampton. SU 23 May 1972
