The following information was submitted by Sherry (#48897605)
Samuel T.H. Ailman, for many years was proprietor of a tobacco and cigar store on Broadway. The business started about 1896 on upper Washington Square, and when that building was razed for construction of the Armed Services YMCA, Ailman moved his store to it's location on Broadway where it remained and he remained as proprietor until his death in 1916. After his death, his son-in-law W. Frank Ebbit purchased the business from the estate and "Ebbitt's" periodical and tobacco shop stayed in this location opposite city hall for an additional forty years until the day of his retirement and sale of the business on which ended nearly 60 years of family ownership. Further details concerning W. Frank Ebbitt, his retirement and sale of the store can be found in an article printed in Newport Daily News, June 1, 1955, Page 3 "Veteran Newport Merchant Retires".
