IRIS A. DICHTEL 71, of Memphis, died January 25, 2012, after a long illness. Iris was born in Memphis to John Byron and Myrtice Holley Aday. She attended Memphis Training School and graduated from Messick High School; she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Memphis. She retired from Colonial Middle School, and was an active contributor to Memphis City Schools through teaching and organizing alumni events. Like her mother, Iris was an accomplished artist, most recently beading jewelry with a group of special friends. She loved to travel with her late husband, George "Wally" Dichtel, Jr., and had toured all 50 states. She was a member at the Cordova Athletic Club and enjoyed the many friends she made there. She was a gifted teacher, artist, organizer and friend; strong in her opinions and abilities, tireless in her efforts to give and give back. Iris was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Cordova, TN. She is survived by her brothers, J.B. Aday and George Aday; her sons, Michael Carmony, Richard Dichtel, and Chris Dichtel; and daughters, Carol Elkins, Cathy Watson, and Kim Sawyer; and grandchildren, Sawyer Ditchel, Sgt. Wesley Brock, and James Arnett. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wally; his sons, George "Chip" Dichtel III and Randy Dichtel; and her sister, Esther Bell. She leaves many children who were influenced by her, and many friends who will miss her greatly. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, at noon with a visitation beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Family Funeral Care.
