Member of Texas state senate, 1954; US Representative from Texas, 1962-81. He championed flood control and clean water during his 19 years in Congress. He was elected to fill the vacancy of the 4th District created by the death of House Speaker Sam Rayburn. Lake Ray Roberts, north of Denton, TX was named in his honor.
