"In late November, 1906, Papa got a message that his father [Doc Ward] was very ill at his home in Columbia, LA. He caught the first train from Stamps [AR] to Columbia. he was gone several days. When he came back, Mamma asked him how his father was. he replied in the saddest voice I have ever heard, "We buried him yesterday." that was December 3, my eleventh birthday. Many years later I went to Columbia to look for Grandpa's grave. County officials and Methodist Church people were friendly and cooperative, but no one remembered him. Mortality records did not go back that far. Grandpa was a Methodist, so I went to the Methodist Church minister, but he could not help. The old cemetery was just back of the church. The minister said that vandals had moved grave markers around until no one could tell where they belonged. The church board had ordered them all removed, and the burial ground turned into a lawn. - total oblivion." Henry C. Ward, "Opening Memory's Door", Pgs 31 - 32, c. 1975.
