The son of George & Margaret (Arendt) Corwell, in 1860 he was a laborer
living in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10"
tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg February 23, 1865,
receiving a $500 bounty for so doing, mustered into federal service there
February 24 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa),
and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865. Bates spells his
name "Cornwell," the company register has it as "Cornell," but he signed
his enlistment papers "Corwell." He, along with the other 1865 recruits,
is missing from the company descriptive list.
He married German-born Margaret Leiper and fathered Samuel Clarence (b.
07/??/79), George H. (b. 07/??/81), Bertha M. (b. 02/??/83), Anna Rebecca
(b. @1885 - married a Warren), Carl Edward (b. 08/??/87), Harvey Nathaniel
(b. 02/??/89), Emma E. (b. 12/??/90 - married George T. Yeakle), Amos
Grover Cleveland (b. 01/??/93), Ellen M. "Nellie" (b. 01/??/95), and James
W. (b. 04/??/98). In 1870-90, he lived with his family in Franklin
Township, Adams County, but sometime before his death relocated to York
Borough, York County.
