Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold, an aged cousin of Augustus Leavens, who had made her home with the Leavens family for several years, passed away at the Leavens home Tuesday afternoon, July 6, 1926 at about 3 o'clock, following a stroke of paralysis which occurred Monday. (Alice Horner's note: Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold was Elizabeth Dorcus Palmer, a daughter of Frederick David Palmer and Rhuea Margaret Leavens. Augustus Leavens was a child of Demetrius and Melissa [Potter] Leavens; he was born in 1862.)

Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold, aged 83, died at the home of her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Leavens, on the Sandridge south of Savanna at 2:45 yesterday afternoon, July 6, 1926. Mrs. Arnold suffered a stroke of paralysis on Monday. She had lived with the Leavens family for the last 13 years. Funeral services will be held from the Leavens home at 2:30 tomorrow and from the Christian church at Thomson at 3, with interment in Thomson Cemetery. Mrs. Arnold was a member of the Baptist church in Savanna. Rev. Harry Secor will conduct the funeral services.

After hours of suffering, patiently borne, Elizabeth (Palmer) Arnold entered into perfect peace at a few minutes before 3 o'clock Tuesday, July 6, 1926 at the age of 83 years 7 months and 5 days. (Alice Horner's note: The Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 shows her date of birth as December 1, 1841. She was born near Syracuse, New York December 1, 1842, the youngest of a family of three children, two brothers having died year ago. (Alice Horner's note: The copy of the obituary I have was typed by someone else decades ago. I don't have the original obituary, and I have no idea whether "died year ago" means these brothers died one year ago, or many years ago. I could not find their death dates anywhere online.) When but a child she came to Illinois with her parents who did not long survive, the three children left parentless, were cared for by relatives and friends until they became able to care for themselves.
After her marriage, her home was for a time at Missouri Valley, Iowa. (Alice Horner's note: She married James Whitcomb Arnold.) Three daughters were born to her, they being Kate who died in infancy; Myrtle, Mrs. F. O. Palmer, deceased, whose home was at Canova, South Dakota; and Rhuea, Mrs. Wilson, last heard from at Broken Bow, Nebraska. Six grandchildren are among her survivors. For the past several years she made her home with her cousin Augustus Leavens and his wife and all possible for her comfort and welfare was done for her by them. Last Monday she was stricken with what she realized would prove fatal, while yet able to speak she did not wish to be a burden to others. Shortly before her death, freed from bodily suffering and being a Christian she prepared to say, "It is will with my Soul," she closed her eyes and went forth, to meet her Savior, her trust and faith making her unafraid. She was a member of the Baptist church and lived in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, charitable, industrious, helpful, and kind and was beloved by all.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Christian Church of Thomson, with Rev. Harry Secor officiating. Hymns were sung by Mrs. Boyd Latham and Mrs. H. P. Greison, with Miss Lola Colby at the piano. Interment was made in the Thomson cemetery. She was also the cousin of Norman Leavens.
