He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 200th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. On March 15, 1865 he was brevetted Colonel, US Volunteers for "coolness, bravery and skill at Ft. Steedman, Virginia."
