Actress. Real name Grethe Gerda Kornstadt. Born in Stettin, Germany, she trained at the UFA drama school and made her screen debut in "Heimkehr" (1928). After an unsuccessful stint in Hollywood she settled in France in 1933. Parlo is best remembered for her starring role in Jean Vigo's "L'Atalante" (1934), and as a German war widow who shelters two escaped French prisoners in Jean Renoir's "La Grande Illusion" (1937). She was deported to Germany as an enemy alien during World War II, but returned to France in 1949 and resumed her career.
