He served in the United States Army during the post-Civil War conflicts with the Plains Indians as a Private in Company L, 8th United States Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action from August to October, 1868. Awarded the Medal on July 24, 1869 with thirty-four other soldiers, his citation reads simply "Bravery in scouts and actions against Indians."
