Abednago Downing was born about 1753 in Charles County, Maryland and died about 1833 in Overton County, Tennessee. He is the son of Nathaniel Downing and Elizabeth Marlow. He married Millicent Waters (1755-1853) on June 30, 1776 in Trinity Parish, Newport, Charles County, Maryland.
In 1778 he signed an "Oath of Fidelity" in Charles County, Maryland which identifies him as a Patriot during the Revolutionary War.
He removed from Maryland sometime after the Revolutionary War and was in Franklin and Habersham Counties in Georgia in the late 1790's and early 1800's. He then moved on to Wayne County, Kentucky (1820 Census). From there he removed to Overton County, Tennessee. His daughter, Eleanor Downing Thomas (1777-bet 1860-1870) and son-in-law, William Thomas, lived in Wayne County, Kentucky (1820 & 1830 Census) before they returned to Georgia about 1833.
