from the Republican for May 2, 1940:

Union Township Farmer Takes Life By Hanging

Charles Freeland Had Been Adjudged Insane

Charles E. Freeland, age 54, a farmer living south of Lizton, committed suicide, last Saturday morning, by hanging. He resided on the E. T. Foster farm about five miles from Lizton.

According to the coroner's report, Nr. Freeland left the house early Saturday morning, ostensibly to do the morning chores. When he failed to return, Mrs. Freeland went to investigate. She was unable to find him in the barn and called several neighbors who began a search.

A short time later, he was found in the hay mow, where he had hung himself. Dr. Louis W, Armstrong, deputy coroner, was notified and made the investigation. Examination revealed that Mr. Freeland had evidently attempted to cut himself as there were several self-inflicted abrasions on his face.

For several months, Mr. Freeland had been in ill health and suffering from melancholia. Last week he had been examined by physicians appointed by the court and had been pronounced of unsound mind.
