William H Buffington was the s/o Philip Buffington & Sarah A Stitt of Dearborn Co, IN.
William was a veteran of the Civil War - Co A 7th Reg't Indiana Infantry. He enrolled on 5 Sep 1861 and mustered out on 20 Sep 1864, both in Indianapolis. He was an invalid after the war and claimed head trouble and nervous prostration caused by sunstroke at Petersburg in 1864.
He was married to Mary E Goslee (born c. 1849 MO) on 21 Nov 1866 in Buchanan Co, Missouri. Pension papers show they were divorced in 1875 in Weston, MO (Platte Co).
His pension application says they had 4 children and that but Harry died before 1898.

The 1870 census shows the couple in St Joseph, MO with the eldest 3 children. The 1880 Census finds William alone keeping bar in St Joseph, and Mary in Hot Springs, Garland, AR, with all 4 children and a servant. She was widowed and her name was Mary Reed.
W H Buffington died intestate and destitute. A March 1911 Application for Reimbursement for William's final expenses, by his friend John J Carroll, says he died of cancer and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in St Joseph, MO (aka Ashland Cemetery) and that his ex-wife was deceased at that time.
