Although Wells considered himself a resident of Houston and Corpus Christi, for the past several years he and his wife Susan have lived in Kerrville.
Wells was born in San Antonio on the 28th of November 1932 to Maco and Virginia Kirkland Stewart. He attended Lawrenceville School, Princeton University, and the University of Texas Law School. Wells was an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County and later became Judge of the 308th District Court of Texas.
He held positions in many civic organizations, including Director of Goodwill Industries, Director of the Board of Regents of Texas Southern University, Director of the Houston Association of Big Brothers, and Vice President of the Houston Youth Symphony & Ballet. Wells also served on the Board of Directors for the Juvenile Board of Harris County. He was a member of Arabia Temple Shriners, Masons, and Downtown Kiwanis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Maco; and by his first wife, Margaret Wright Stewart.
