Roy Sullivan Rice, a Northern Pacific railroad conductor, collapsed Saturday afternoon while hunting on the Fred Grout farm at Appleton, Minnesota and died at the hospital there Saturday night. He had been in poor health for several months, being afflicted with asthma.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church. Rev. Crawford Grays officiating. The McKee Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Rice was born at Verndale March 28, 1889. He lived in Brainerd and Virginia before coming to Bemidji in 1909. He was married to Laura Bentley in 1910 and had continued to make his home here. He was a member of Bemidji Masonic Lodge No. 233.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Rice; two sons, Kenneth and Luverne, all of Bemidji; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Siani of Staten Island, N.Y. and Mrs. Josie Morrison of Merrifield, Minn.; two brothers, Clarence of Trentdale, Ore., and Elmer of Seattle, Wash., and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Wm. Lizotte of Bemidji is a niece. (Northland Times, Oct 28, 1948)
