O. H. Rice Dies at his Son's Home in Nymore
O. H. Rice, widely known in this vicinity as Grandpa Rice, passed away Friday night at about nine o'clock at the home of his son, Clarence Rice, 507 Third Street So., with whom he had made his home for about three years.
He had been in poor health for the past two months but for the past three weeks had been in a critical condition and bedfast. Had he lived until May 20th, he would have reached the age of 78 years. He was born at Shelbyville, Indiana, May 20, 1854.
For years he was a resident of Aldrich, Minn., near Staples, then moved to Virginia, Minn., and from there to Bemidji. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Rice, who has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Laura Twaddle of Duluth, another daughter, Mrs. M. E. Morrison of Brainerd, three sons, Clarence and Roy of Bemidji, and Elmer Rice of Duuth, and one sister, Mrs. Frances Huntley of Fergus Falls, also 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. Morrison arrived here on Thursday and the others came on the early morning train. A grandson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rice, also arrived from Duluth today.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Ibertson Chaptel and were in charge of Rev. D. J. Van Devander, pastor of the M. E. Church.
Grandpa Rice was widely known in this vicinity and will be missed by a large circle of friends, whose sympathy is extended to the family in their bereavement. (Bemidji Sentinel, April 1932)
