ANDRIST - HILTON AUSTIN

Sadly, we mark the sudden passing of Hilton Austin Andrist, August 9, 2004 in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He leaves to mourn his loving spouse, Olive; son Herbert (Norma) of Cowichan Station; daughter, Linda Donohue (Alan) of Victoria; grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Cheryl Knelson (Pomroy), Christina Smethurst (Ian), Ken Donohue (Carrie), Lisa, Clinton and Scott Walker and 5 great grandchildren. Hilton was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Evelyn (Sheldon), 6 brothers and two sisters, most recently his dear brother John, of Cobble Hill.

Hilton was born in Alingly, Saskatchewan to John Jr. and Elizabeth (Dingler) Andrist on September 7, 1915. His parents were both of Swiss descent. He was raised on the family farm, and learned a variety of skills, which he used wisely throughout his life. He raised horses and with his gentle manner was able to purchase a horse and have it broken by the time he arrived home. He moved to British Columbia with his first wife, Evelyn and son, Herbert. Settling first in Victoria as a shopkeeper and then to the Cowichan Valley, where he owned Lakeside Farm and milked 35 cows by hand each morning and evening. Hilton's varied career led him to logging, owning and operating Hilton's Cafe, and he always dabbled in residential construction and renovations. In later years Hilton lived in Nanaimo and recently retired to the Nanaimo Senior's Village.

Hilton's musical talents were numerous, especially playing the organ, piano and accordion. His kindness, gentle manner, smile and whit affected those who were lucky to know him. He will be sadly missed.

The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made in his memory to the SPCA. A tea will be held on Monday, August 16, 2004, at Paradise Isle Senior's Society, 201 Albert St., Nanaimo, from 1-3 p.m.

First Memorial Funeral Services were in charge of arrangements.
