William Gwin (middle name unk.), great-great grandpa of this writer, was born 18 Dec 1820 at Cahaba, AL; he died 29 April 1889 at Wilsonville, AL, and is buried there at Wilsonville City Cemetery. He was married on 12--some records say 13--May 1842 in Cahawba to Roseanne "Roe" Carlisle Jones Wilson (sister of William's brother Isom's wife Mary B. Wilson, making all their descendants double cousins). Roe was born 22 Aug. 1822, probably in Cahaba, and she died 29 Mar 1907 at Tampa, FL, probably at the home of their granddaughter, Mary Alice Lochridge, and her husband, William Russell Ham. Roe's body was returned to Wilsonville for burial beside her husband.

According to Rev. Cotten's diary entries, William and Roe and his parents were very active in the founding of and service in the Methodist church in Cahaba.

Will and Roe may have been married on May 13, not May 12, for two reasons: (1) the marriage record in Dallas Co. (AL) for Wm. Guin and Rosa Ann Wilson is dated 13 May 1842, and (2) a perpetual calendar shows that the 12th was on a Thursday and the 13th on a Friday, and one would think that a weekend wedding would have been preferable over one on a weekday. On the other hand, getting married on Friday the 13th might not have been considered very wise a hundred and fifty years ago, so perhaps it WAS on a Thursday!

A 16-page typewritten transcription of excerpts from a diary of William's pastor and best friend, Rev. Cotten, reveals many insights into the lives of Will and Roe and his father, John. There are almost 60 entries--many containing references to the Gwins and Bassets--that span from April 1849 to March of 1855, during which time John Gwin and William Gwin lived in Cahaba. I've created two separate pages for (1) my notes from that diary (http://www.gwingenealogy.net//GENEALOGY/ALABAMA/cottendiaryexcerpts.htm) and (2) an alphabetized list of over 80 names referenced therein (http://www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/ALABAMA/CottenDiaryNames.htm).

William and Roseanne had at least ten children, five of whom survived childhood, four of whom married and had children of their own:
1. Mary Ann Elizabeth Gwin m. Robert Guy Lochridge
2. Martha Jane Gwin, d. as infant
3. William Sutton "Sutt" Gwin m. Ida Eliza Basset
4. John Wesley Gwin, d. single in his twenties
5. Rufus King Gwin m. his first cousin Ann Turner
6. Lucy Marcella Gwin, d. single in her teens
7. Isham Griffin Gwin, Sr., m. Mary Etta "Molly" Self
8. an unknown Gwin, d. in infancy
9. an unknown Gwin, d. in infancy
10. Thomas Wilson Gwin, d. single in his teens
