John Pratt Nugent was born in Rathdowney, Queen's County, Ireland in 1792, the son of James and Aphra Pratt Nugent. John sailed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1816 and was sent by his employer Kirkman Jackson to Natchez, Mississippi, where he met and later married Anne Lavinia Lewis. They were the parents of nine children.

father of our fellow citizen, Col. W.L. Nugent, died in this city on Sunday morning last, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. The funeral obsequies took place, from the Methodist church, on Monday morning.
