Prominent Citizen Of Montgomery County And Father Of Col. B.R. Calhoun, Died December 13.
Mr. Jas. I. Calhoun, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Montgomery County, and father of Col. B.R. Calhoun, of Eastman, died at his home at Tarrytown on December 13th, of the infirmities of old age.
Mr. Calhoun would have been 85 years old had he lived until his next birthday. He had been a deacon of the Baptist church of his community for 60 years, and his body was buried on the same square of land on which he was born, his entire life having been spent in the vicinity of Tarrytown. He is survived by five sons and three daughters, viz: Col. B.R. Calhoun of Eastman, Mr. George L. Calhoun of Florida, Messrs. Daniel O., Charlton H. and Washington L. Calhoun of Montgomery County; Mrs. Clarisy J. Adams, Mrs. Cynthia Boyd and Mrs. Maggie Simons, also of Montgomery County.
Mr. Calhoun was in many respects a remarkable man, being highly endowed with many patriarchal traits of character that were the admiration of his fellowmen. He was firm in his faith and said of him that he never was guilty of an unclean act. He was a large contributor both of his time and money to affairs of the church, and in his death the church and community has lost one of its staunchest Christians and most useful citizens.
Col. B.R. Calhoun, of this city, attended the burial, which took place on the 14th. Family links: Spouse: Nancy Clarissa Connell Calhoun (1833 - 1909) Children: James W. Calhoun (1856 - 1906)* *Calculated relationship
