Henry Leonard Oller Death Announcement Published in Alton Telegraph:

Former Roxana trustee, mayor dies at 71 of cancer:

Roxana Henry L. Oller, active in village government for more than 30 years as a trustee and mayor, died Saturday at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.

A longtime Democratic precinct committeeman, Oller was first elected to the Village Board in 1957 and served until he was elected mayor in 1985. He stepped down in 1989, choosing not to seek re-election.

"He did a good job for our city," said Trustee Paul "Buzz" Kindle, also a former mayor. Kindle, who was elected trustee the year Oller became mayor, said Oller transformed village government.

"Before him, the mayor pretty much ran the city," Kindle said. "He gave the board members a lot of power and a lot of responsibility. He was good at delegating authority and listening to everyone."

Kindle said Oller and his wife, Mae, were active church and community members outside of politics. "He always provided transportation and help for senior citizens," Kindle said.

Oller continued to take an interest in village government and people often sought his advice and counsel, Kindle said.

Born in Christian County, Oller served as a pilot in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He went to work for Alton Box Board Co., then worked at what is now the Clark refinery for 39 years before he retired in 1985.

Oller and his wife were planning to move to a home in Missouri that Oller himself had built for their retirement.
