Andrew "Sandy" Irvine
Birth: Apr. 8, 1902
Death: Jun. 8, 1924

Explorer and Mountain Climber. A student at Oxford University and a talented sportsman, Irvine was chosen by British explorer George Mallory to accompany him on the first ascent of Mount Everest. Irvine who was also an engineer was chosen for his vast knowledge of primitive oxygen tanks and his athletic abilities. The two men were last seen alive on the slopes of Mount Everest on or about June 6-8, 1924. In 1999 the frozen body of George Mallory was found at about 27,000 to 28,000 feet altitude by another mountain climbing team, but the body of Irvine was not found. It is believed that Irvine fell to his death off the side of the mountain with one or two cameras and Mallory was left to die alone of exposure. In 2004 another mountain climbing team set out to try and find the cameras that Irvine was supposed to be carrying thinking that if the film could still be intact that it would be a great historical find, and that the Kodak film could be developed. (bio by: K)
