Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he served as a Quartermaster's Mate Second Class in the US Navy. On April 21, 1914, during the seizure of Vera Cruz, Mexico, Quartermaster's Mate Second Class Bishop showed extraordinary skill in the line of his profession as a member of the combat troops put ashore from his ship the USS Florida. For bravery in actions a this operation, he was awarded his Medal of Honor on June 15, 1914. Remaining the US Navy, he retired a Commander and died at the age of 65 in San Diego, California.
