Robert Dickson "Bobby" Hoffman, 41, of Jacksonville, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Bobby was born on Oct. 27, 1970, the son of Robert M. and K. Ann Dickson Hoffman, in Joliet, Ill. He attended South Jacksonville Elementary School and graduated from Jacksonville High School in the class of 1989, where he was a member of the JHS Band, as well as the basketball and track teams. He graduated from Lakeland Community College in Mattoon, Ill.
For over 20 years, Bobby was employed by Becker Farms and worked closely with his father-in-law, Loren Becker, in operating the farm. He had a large circle of friends and never met a stranger. This is reflected by the many area farmers who have come together to harvest his family's crops.
Being a passionate and enthusiastic fan of Jacksonville High School sports, Bobby volunteered for five years as an assistant boys basketball coach. He was a founding member of the JHS Boys Basketball Boosters, when he began fundraising efforts for the team by hosting an annual golf outing in 2007. Bobby loved playing basketball at The Bowl and worked very hard to see that it would be maintained for years to come.
Bobby was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, the Galesburg Railroad Museum and a past board member of Chapin Farmers Elevator and the Morgan County Fair Association. He continued to be a dedicated volunteer at the Fair by cooking in the Pavilion.
Not only did Bobby enjoy JHS sports, but was an avid fan of the Boston Celtics, St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams. He loved life and he loved his family, especially his two daughters. He spent much of his time participating in their activities, instilling in them a love of music and taking them to places like Disney World and the family cottage in Michigan. Bobby is survived by his wife, Kristan Joy Becker Hoffman; his two daughters, Leah Joy and Kolby Dickson; his parents; a sister, Susan (Devin) Spears; two nieces, Natalie Kristine Spears and Claire Suzanne Spears and his faithful dog, Kanga. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harvey and Georgia Dickson and Theodore and Pearl Hoffman, who were all of Galesburg, and his beloved dog, Roxanne.
The family will meet friends from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at the Buchanan and Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville High School Bowl. Those who are attending are asked to please enter through the south doors. A private burial will be held Friday at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Public Schools Foundation for the preservation of The Bowl.
