The Queen's Company
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LCpl Groom was killed when his vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
Aged 32, he was from Fiji. LCpl Groom joined the British Army in 2007. On completion of infantry training was posted to Nijmegen Company, Grenadier Guards, where he participated in public duties and ceremonial tasks at the Royal Palaces. Two years later he joined 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, participating in an overseas training exercise in Kenya before deploying to Afghanistan in September 2009 with The Queen's Company. On his return he took part in the Infantry Skiing Championships in early 2011 and attended a Junior Non-Commissioned Officer Cadre in January 2012. Newly promoted, he deployed in April 2012 to Afghanistan for his second tour of duty. He was described as a superb soldier, well-liked and respected by all ranks. Although quiet and reserved, he had a great sense of humour and would always take time to watch over the younger soldiers around him.
LCpl Groom leaves behind his family, including his mother and sister, and many friends in the UK, New Zealand and Fiji. He was predeceased by his father.
A repatriation ceremony was held at RAF Brize Norton in UK on September 20, 2012.
Funeral and burial with full military honours was held on October 15, 2012 at North Shore Memorial Park, Auckland.
