Henry was the oldest of ten children born to Heinrich Bruns and his wife, Adelheit Anna Kuhl. He married first to Karolina "Lina" Schultz on January 30, 1878 in Will County, Illinois. They had two children, Ida (1879-1890) and Otto (1881-1914). Lina died about three weeks after Otto's birth due to complications from his birth. Henry married to Dora Valentin on August 26, 1883 in Will County, Illinois. He married third to Emelie Augusta Kneise in 1887. Twelve children were born to this union; eight sons and four daughters.
