TOOELE CIVIC, CHURCH LEAADER, ARCHIBALD BEVAN, 83, DIES

Tooele - Archibald Bevan, 83 former Tooele Mayor and State Legislator, civic and religious leader died Friday at 11:30 p.m. at his residences of causes incident to age.

Mr. Bevan who had been ill the past three weeks, was born Sept. 8, 1868, in Tooele, a son of James and Mary Shields Bevan. He spent most of his life in Tooele, where he attended public schools.

Following his graduation from Tooele High School he attended Brigham Young University, where he was graduated in 1891. Mr. Bevan married Christine Lundsteen in 1892 in the old Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Endowment House in Salt Lake City. The marriage later was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.

He first was employed at the Mill Pond in Tooele County. Later he carried mail between Stockton and Vernon by horseback, traveling some 3000 miles in that employment.

For six years Mr. Bevan taught school in Elsinore, Sevier County, and in Levan, Juab County, two years. He also taught a number of years in Tooele County, in Lake Viey and Tooele.

In 1898 he was elected Tooele County School Superintendent and later entered the drugstore business. He constructed Crystal Drugstore about 48 years ago and had operated the concern until his recent illness.

He completed a pharmacy course I Highland Park College, Iowa, in 1896. He then became a member of the State Pharmacy Board, a position he held 19 years.

He was elected Mayor of Tooele in 1903 and again in 1929. Mr. Bevan was elected to the State Legislature in 1917, the same year he became President of the Utah Rexall Club.

Survivors include a son, A. Dean Bevan, and a daughter, Mrs. Thelma B. Slowik, Tooele; six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Bates, Tooele.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Tate Mortuary.
