Margaret Novella Smith was born December 12, 1889 in Dixon Springs, Tennessee (Smith County), daughter of James Thomas 'Toby' Smith (1863-1902) and Susan Elizabeth Campbell (1867-1949).
The 1900 Federal Census for Township 4, Indian Territory (Chickasaw Nation) shows Margaret N. Smith, age 10, born December 1889 in Tennessee; living with her father, Toby Smith, a farmer, age 36, born April 1863 in Tennessee; and her mother, Susan E., age 33, born April 1867 in Tennessee. The census shows that Toby and Susan had been married 16 years and had given birth to nine children, all still living. Also living in the household were Margaret Novella's siblings: William F. Smith, age 14, born June 1885; Jessie J. Smith, age 13, born December 1886; Martha Smith, age 12, born December 1887; Talmage Smith, age 9, born March 1891; Lawrence E. Smith, age 6, born December 1893; James Smith, age 4, born August 1895; Samuel B. Smith, age 3, born May 1897; and Louella Smith, age 11 months, born July 1899; all born in Tennessee.
Margaret Novella first married Harvey Andrew Stallings, who was born November 10, 1886 in Tennessee. They had five children: Tennyson Aubrey Stallings (1910-1989); Richard Stallings (1912-1913); Mattie Belle Stallings (1914-1993); Elizabeth Stallings (1916-1999); and Dorothy Louise Stallings (1922-2002).
Margaret Novella second married William B. Lancaster who was born May 9, 1886 in Tennessee, son of William J. Lancaster and Sally (maiden name unknown). William had been married before and may have had children.
The 1930 Federal Census for Speairs, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows William B. Lancaster, a farmer, age 50, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Margaret N. Lancaster, age 40, born in Tennessee. Living with them were Margaret's four children by a former marriage: Tennyson A. Stallings, a farm laborer, age 19; Mattie B. Stallings, age 15; Elizabeth Stallings, age 14; and Dorothy L. Stallings, age 7; all born in Tennessee.
The 1940 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows William B. Lancaster, a roller operator in city steel work, age 53, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Margaret N. Lancaster, age 50, born in Tennessee.
Margaret Novella died August 20, 1941 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in the Highland Cemetery.
