Josiah was the eldest child of Lyman and Fanny (Barnard) Mathers. His father died in 1850, leaving Josiah as head of the house.
He married Melinda Cowgill on Feb. 28,1854 in Howard Co., IN. Here in IN two sons were born. The family moved to MO to be nearer Melinda's father, and son, William was born in 1861 and died in 1863.
He served in the Civil War on the Union ranks, enlisting in Missouri. He served in the 27th Infantry for 2 years. He moved with his family from MO back to Indiana where 2 sons were born. The family moved to Cass Co., NE, one daughter was born and then to Kearney Co., NE in 1874. His wife and infant daughter died in Dec. 1874.
He married Mary Jane Conyers on Sept 14, 1875 in Kearney Co., NE. He and Mary Jane were the parents of eleven children.
Josiah donated the land for the Eaton Cemetery where he buried his first wife and daughter in 1874.
Preceding him in death were four children and his first wife.
