Sister Susan Kongs died September 11, 2012. She was born March 12, 1917, in Seneca to Louis and Anna Mary Kramer Kongs, the third of eight children, and was baptized Susanna Bernadine.

Sister Susan was a Sister of St. Joseph for 72 years. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, on September 14, 1938. On March 19, 1939, Susanna received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Ann Louis. Later she returned to her baptismal name, Susan. She pronounced first vows March 19, 1940, and final vows March 19, 1943.

Sister Susan received a B.A. with a major in English and a minor in history from Marymount College, Salina. She taught in institutions staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in New Almelo, Leoville, Manhattan and Chicago. A highlight of her teaching career was when she received the Teacher of the Year in Kansas award in 1988. After 44 years in the ministry of teaching, she did volunteer work until 2002, when she retired to the Motherhouse.

Sister Susan was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. Survivors included two sisters, Rita Feldkamp and Dorothy Ronnebaum; and brother, Louis Kongs.
