Leonard Allan Lewis
Birth: Feb. 28, 1895
Death: Sep. 21, 1918

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Herefordshire, England, he served as a Corporal in the 6th Battalion, Northampton Shire Regiment, British Army. In actions at Ronssoy, France, on September 18, 1918, Corporal Lewis was in command of a section on the right of the attacking line. Held up by intense German machine-gun fire, he saw that two guns were enfilading the line and crawled forward alone, successfully bombed the guns and by rifle fire made the whole team surrender. He was killed by machine gun fire three days later. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on January 31, 1919. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
