| Birth: | Feb. 23, 1890 | | Death: | Oct. 1, 1916 | World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, he served as Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Otago Infantry Regiment, British Army. In actions near Eaucourt L'Abbaye, France, on October 1, 1916, Sergeant Brown with a comrade, succeeded in reaching a point within thirty yards of the enemy guns. Four of the German crew were killed and captured. As he continued to advance, he was held up by another machine-gun position. Again Sergeant Brown with a comrade, rushed the gun and killed the crew. After this second position had been taken, the company came under very heavy shell-fire, Sergeant Brown did much to keep up the spirit of his men. He attacked another machine-gun which was holding up the attack, killed the gun crew and captured the gun. Later, he himself was killed in action. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on June 12, 1917. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
