Portuguese Monarch. He reigned as King of Portugal from 1889 to 1908. His parents were King Luiz I and Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, the daughter of king Umberto I of Italy. King Carlos I was an intelligent but extravagant man. Colonial treaties with Britain in 1892 and 1902 stabilized the colonial situation in Africa. Portugal was twice declared bankrupt during his reigh, in 1892 and again in 1902 causing industrial disturbances, socialist and republican antagonism and criticism of the monarchy from the press. The king responded by appointing general João Franco as military dictator. On Feb. 1, 1908 the royal family returned from the Palace of Vila Vicosa to Lisbon. They travelled by coach to Almada and from there they took a boat to cross the Tagus river and disembarked in Cais do Sodré in downtown Lisbon. On their way to the royal palace, the carriage with Carlos I and his family passed through Terreiro do Paco. While crossing the square, shots were fired from the crowd by at least two men: Alfredo Costa and Manõel Buica. The king died immediately and his heir, the crown prince Luíz Filipe was mortally wounded. The younger son prince Manõel was hit in an arm. The assassins were shot on the spot by members of the royal bodyguard and later recognized as members of the Republican Party. About twenty minutes after the king had died, the young crown prince also died and prince Manõel became the last king of Portugal. (bio by: Benny Chordt Hansen)
