Veteran of World War II. Graduate of the Naval Air Flight Training. Received his Naval Aviator Wings in August 1942 and was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. Served on six aircraft carriers during the war and was on the USS Guadalcanal during the capture of the U505 German submarine. Retired as a Captain in the United States Naval Reserve.

Preceded in death by his son, David Dennett Welch.

Gordon Robert Welch, 78, of 4600 Ocean Drive #602, Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away November 3, 1998 at his home. He was born July 26, 1920 in Martinsville, Va., to Bessie Dent and Gordon Rodway Welch. He was former owner of Corpus Christi Janitor Supply Company, Inc. Raised in Roanoke, Bob graduated from Jefferson High School and received his college education from the University of Virginia and the University of Texas. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, having served as Sunday School Teacher, Vestryman, Junior and Senior Warden, Chairman of St. James Episcopal School Board and Trustee of Cliff Maus Village. He was active in the Diocese of West Texas, serving as Treasurer, Chairman of the Department of Finance, and member of the Executive Board. In reference to community service, he served as President of the Corpus Christi Rotary Club, Corpus Christi County Club, Corpus Christi Town Club, and the USO. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International named him a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. He served as a director of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, Navy League, YMCA, United Way , and the Corpus Christi Community Concerts. He was Chairman of the Corpus Christi Airport Board and the Airport development Corporation. He was a Director of Rineer Hydraulics, Inc., an active member of the Buccaneer Commission, the Corpus Christi Mustangs , and the Board of the Lexington Museum. He came to Corpus Christi in 1942 as a Cadet in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Naval Air Flight Training, receiving his Naval Aviator wings in August 1942. He was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. He served on six aircraft carriers during World War II and was on the U.S.S. Guadalcanal during the capture of the U-505 German submarine. For several years he served on the Promotion Board for the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C. After 28 years of active and reserve service, he retired as Captain, USNR. Predeceased by his son, David Dennett Welch; and his sister, Catharine Welch Garman, Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Dennett Welch; his son, Dr. Gordon Robert Welch Jr. and his wife Debra Smith Welch; two grandchildren, Gordon Robert Welch III, and Jennifer Dennett Welch; a sister, Helen Welch Ewald and her husband Tink Ewald; a brother-in-law, Harry S. Garman Jr. of Roanoke; nieces and nephews, Carolyn Foose and Bill Reichardt of Dallas, Texas, and John Ewald, Frank Ewald, Gordon Ewald, Mary Carolyn Galvin, Ted Garman, and Harry Garman of Roanoke. There will be visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1998 at Seaside Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 6, 1998 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Ned Bowersox officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the David Dennett Welch Scholarship at St. James Episcopal School; St. James Episcopal School; the Church of the Good Shepherd, 700 S. Broadway, Corpus Christi, Texas or to a charity of one's choice. Pallbearers will be Charles Bartley, The Rev. Charles Dobbins, Hodd Nebeker, Bert Roscoe, Robert Slagle, Wayne Strand, Brock Thomas, and Jim Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Louis Concklin, James Freeman, L.A. McNeil, Charles Ofner, Dr. Carl Slabaugh, and N.B. Smith. Arrangements by Seaside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, Corpus Christi.
