Kurt C. Backus, 60, Newark, Ohio, a native of Canton, died Sept. 10 in a Newark hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Backus was a truck driver.

Born May 18, 1943, in Canton, son of Inez Iona Backus, he attended local schools and served in the Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1960 to 1964.

He married Elsie Cornea of Connecticut on Jan. 16, 1966.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Kimberley Mallasee and Wanda Gates, both of Newark; a son, Kurt C. II, Newark; three sisters, Mrs. Burton C. (Linda Backus) Parmeter, Ogdensburg, Mrs. Edward (Cheryl Radigan) Law, Edwards, and Sandra Lee Radigan Burt, Watertown; a brother, Richard Hunter, Canton; nine grandchildren, three nieces, five nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A graveside service with military honors was held Tuesday in Newark.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at South Edwards Methodist Church Community Center.

Arrangements are with Criss- Schoedinger Funeral Home, Newark.

Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, N.Y. 13206.
