There was a sad death at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Harris in Paola last Monday, the 13th inst. Their son, John A., aged 33 years, died of consumption, and his wife, who gave birth to a baby in the 9th inst., is very low. The child is living. The young wife left her husband's bedside, on the attending doctor's order, and went to her sister's home, Mrs. Otis Reynolds, on Wednesday night, the 8th, and the baby was born the next morning. On Sunday the child was taken to the Robert Harris home for the father to see it. Looking at the infant he said: "Dear one, good bye; it's my first and last time to see you. And your mother I'll never see again."

John A. Harris was born on the farm east of Paola on the 18th of October, 1870, and grew to manhood in this county. He was industrious, quiet of disposition and friendly with everyone. Four years ago he went to St. Louis and it was there, while acting as Deputy Sheriff guarding property in a street car strike, he took the acute cold that, two years later, developed into quick consumption. In May, 1901, he was married to Miss Maggie Davis, in St. Louis, and their only child is the baby mentioned above. Last year John went to San Antonio, Texas, for relief, and finding none, he returned to his parental roof last spring-returned to die.

Besides father, mother and wife, John leaves one brother, Harry, and four sisters, Mrs. Nora Reynolds, Mrs. Grace Southard, Mrs. Glen Roesen and Arvilla Harris, all living in Paola, except Mrs. Roesen whose home is in Kansas City, Mo.

The burial was in the city cemetery last Tuesday afternoon, services conducted by Rev. W.S. Lockhart of the Christian Church.
