My Grandpa Walter was killed during World War II in the Saar Valley of Germany. His family was from that region, but emmigrated to the United States before he was born. During the war, they had taken some prisoners and were under fire. Grandpa got out of his foxhole to see if the prisoners could perhaps be relatives of his family, and he was hit in the chest and killed.
His only daughter Janelle (my mom) was born four months later on Father's Day. Grandma Claire was heartbroken by his death, and along with her mother, Ella Barbara Smith Murphy, began to raise her child the best she could.
When Mom was 2 1/2, Grandma was courted by and married James Arthur Solheim, who had been a close friend to Walter. Together they raised Janelle and her brother and sisters, and were wonderful grandparents and great-grandparents.
While mom and I never got to know Grandpa Walter, he loved Grandma and his then unborn child very much, and he will always remain in our hearts.
