Martha Williams Lanier was the daughter of Benjamin Boyd Williams and Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" McHenry. She was one of five children born to the couple. Her siblings were: Thomas Williams, Boyd Williams, Miss Mary Williams, Jennie B. Williams (Mrs. Thomas W. Hale), and Bennie Williams (Mrs. Joseph R. Tarpley).
Martha also had two half siblings from her father's line. David James (D.J.) Williams and Sallie F. Williams lost their mother early in their lives but they were raised by their father and Sarah Elizabeth McHenry.
Around 1893, Martha married Winfred Lanier. In 1894, the couple's only child, Winfred William Lanier, was born. Unfortunately, Martha was widowed early in life when her husband died around 1900.

She is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery with her husband and several members of her family including, sisters Mary and Bennie. Many other members of her extended family are also buried in the cemetery.
