Born in Santa Anna, Texas, he was a quarterback known as one of the NFL's first great passers and one of the last men to play without a face-mask. For fifteen seasons, he played with the Chicago Bears (1948), New York Bulldogs (1949), Detroit Lions (1950-58) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1958-62). With the Detroit Lions, he won three divisional crowns (1952-54), won two NFL titles (1952-53) and was selected to the Pro-Bowl five times (1951-53, 1956, 1959). He ended his career with a record of 1814 completions for 26768 yards, 196 touch downs, 2451 yards rushing and 372 points scored. In 1967, he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame. He died of cancer at age 59 in Lubbock, Texas. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
