He was the the child of Peter and Catherine [Nye] Shraw; his mother may have died in childbirth. He was living with his grandparents and was named in his grandfather Nye's will when a young child. He was farming in Missouri with the family of George Nye when he enlisted in the Union army as a private in Company I, 7th Regiment, Missouri Calvary in 1862.
