Edward Lee Lanham of Clarksdale died of heart failure Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Baptist Hospital East in Memphis. He was 67.
Born July 4, 1935, to Lee Roy and Mary Briscoe Lanham, Ed Lanham graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1953. He attended Davidson College and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Mr. Lanham graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., and served in the Army Security Agency as a Slovenian and German linguist.
In 1968, he was selected Clarksdale's Outstanding Young Man of the Year.
An honor graduate of the United States Fidelity and Guaranty School of Insurance, Mr. Lanham was President of his own agency, Boyle, Lanham and Morgan Insurance Agency Inc. , for more than 30 years. Following the 1997 sale of the company, he was associated with J.H. Johnson & Co. He served as president of the Mississippi Delta Insurance Agents Association and director of the Mississippi Insurance Agency. He was a member of the Mississippi Economic Council and the Coahoma County Industrial Foundation. He was a past president of the Clarksdale/Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce.
Active in all phases of community service and civic life, he was a past president of both the Clarksdale Lions Club and the Clarksdale Jaycees, as well as past vice president of the Mississippi Jaycees.
Not only was he a past director of the Mississippi Heart Association, he also served two times as president of the Clarksdale Merchants Credit Association, and led the North Delta Ole Miss Alumni Association and the Coahoma County Heart Association as well. Mr. Lanham chaired fund-raising drives for the March of Dimes, the Cerebral Palsy Fund and the Cancer Fund. His cultural interests led to his participation in the development of Clarksdale Community Theatre and Clarksdale Community Concert Series.
A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, he was a 35-year member of the choir and served the congregation in several leadership positions.
