| Birth: | Mar. 6, 1832 New Lexington Perry County Ohio, USA | | Death: | Jul. 26, 1887 Columbus Franklin County Ohio, USA |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil he was editor and proprietor of the Ohio State Journal, in Columbus, Ohio. In December 1861, Ohio Governor Dennison, appointed him to fill the vacancy for a Major in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. At the Anietam campaign, Sharpsburg Maryland, he took command of the regiment after his commander was wounded at South Mountain on September 14, 1862. As Colonel of 23rd Regiment, he led his men in successive charges and assaults against the Confederates at the Battle of Anietam, September 17, 1862. For his courage and leadership, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he was Postmaster of Columbus, Ohio and later served as United States Minister to the Hawaiian Islands, 1877 to 82. In 1883, he returned to Ohio, where he owned and edited the Toledo Commercial until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
