Glenn Robert Bowen, 93, formerly of Davenport, went home to be with his beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Trinity Rock Island.
Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, at First Evangelical Free Church in Moline, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 10:30 a.m. Interment and military rites will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is entrusted with arrangements.
Mr. Bowen was born Dec. 28, 1918, to Homer David and Clara Elizabeth Beach Bowen in Brighton, Iowa. On July 31, 1941, he married Marcella Elizabeth White. Mrs. Bowen died May 14, 1968.
A member of "The Greatest Generation," Mr. Bowen served in the Army in World War II, receiving many commendations. After seeing action in the Philippines, he was among the first troops to occupy Japan after the surrender.
Mr. Bowen worked hard to support his family as a tool, die and gauge maker, retiring from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1984. In his spare time he loved photography, carpentry, reading and gardening. While in his young years he was a ballroom dancer, turning to square dancing well into his 80s. He was lovingly involved in the lives of his children. A member of American Legion, he served as historian of Post 26 of Davenport for many years. He also was active in Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship of the Quint Cities.
Left with Glenn's memories are his son, Lawrence Bowen, Chicago; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Short Bull, South Sioux City, Neb.; his grandchildren, Lawrence Allen, Chicago, and Heather Ressler, Indiana; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding Mr. Bowen in death were his wife, Marcella; his parents; brother Fred; sisters, Besse, Grace, Mina, Ada and Margaret; and his longtime sweetheart, Marilyn Budelier.
