DIED IN AUBURN
W E Phelps Formerly a Resident of Cortland-Burial Here
Mr William E Phelps, for many years a resident of Cortland, died at his home in Auburn at 8:30 this mrrning after a weeks illness from pleuro-pneumonia. His age was 58 years and 5 months. He had been for four years a guard in Auborn prison and for three years at a previous time occupied a like position. He was a veteran of the Cival War, having served with credit as a member of Company M,Tenth New York Calvary. He was also a member of Grove Post No 98, GAR of Cortland. He was a man held in high esteem and respect by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, who is a daughter of Mr and Mrs Oliver Hitchcock, one of the old families of Cortland, and by two daughters and two sons; Mrs J J Ogden of 15 James St, Cortland, Miss Rachael A Phelps and Ernest and Oliver Phelps of Auburn; also by four brothers, Andrew of Joliet, Ill, Byron M, John H and Frank A of Cortland; also by two sisters Mrs J E Lombard of Marathon and Mrs L R Lewis of Cortland.
The remains will be brought to Cortland for burial and will arrive at 9:41 tomorrow morning. They will be taken at once to the vault at the cemetery, where brief funeral services will be held.
