Novelist, military, Congressman and Plenipotentiary Minister in the United States and in France. He studied at the Military Academy and later in France. He was Mayor of Colchagua. Among its works are: "Martín Rivas" (1862), "El ideal de un Calavera", "Durante la reconquista", "Los Trasplantados" (1906), "El loco estero" (1909) and "Gladys Fairfield" (1912). He is regarded as the "father of Chilean novel."
