Gladys was born in Edwards County in Illinois. Her parents were William Monroe Sams & Bertha Daubs. She had two sisters and a brother. Her grandparents were Starling Hill Sams & Rebecca Madding and Jacob Daubs & Mary Elizabeth Wyatt.

Gladys's father William Monroe Sams was a painter decorator. They moved to Bement about 1910 were she met and married Marion Lee Hill.

Gladys was the mother of three children Virginia Gale Hill, Noma Loraine Hill & Franklin Dean Hill.

Franklin (Frankie) Hill was born April 22 1931 in Long Beach California. He died in a accident about the age of four. In the 1930's cars did not have the safety features they have today. Frankie was leaning against the car door, it accidently opened and he fell out of the car as it was moving. He died from the injuries sustained from the accident. Gladys and Marion never forgot their son, they would often talk about him. Gladys would bring out his christening gown and a photo album. I remember the photograph of him with his wavy blond hair. I always wondered what became of the photographs she had after her death.

Gladys and Marion were both diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and both lived a nursing home before they passed away.
