Helen Alice Binkley Hayes, 88, passed away November 7, 2013 in Manhattan, Kansas. Born in Augusta, Kansas, Helen graduated from Augusta High School in May of 1943. She married Robert (Bob) Harvey Hayes on May 15, 1944 and worked as a secretary in Augusta until Bob was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1945. The following year they moved to Manhattan where Bob attended Kansas State College. Following graduation in 1952, they moved first to Augusta and then to Independence, Kansas where they bought a veterinary practice. In 1975 Helen and Bob moved back to Manhattan where Bob earned his PHD from KSU. Upon Bob's graduation, they moved to Stilwell, Kansas followed by retirement in Golden, Colorado. In 2005, they returned to Manhattan and resided at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center until their deaths. Robert passed away in May of 2012.

Helen was a homemaker, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout leader and secretary/bookkeeper in Bob's veterinary practice. She was active in their church. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing and knitting.

Helen is survived by three children: Jon Hayes (Becky) of Baldwin City, KS; David Hayes (Marsha) of Independence, KS; and Mary Helen Friesen (Randal) of Englewood, CO; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Helen will be buried with Robert at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, KS. A family graveside service is being planned.
