During the spring of 1850 Zachary's parents Israel and Rachel Baskins Trumbo, left Ohio for Bremer County, Iowa, where Zachary would be born a few years later. History records, "Quite a party arrived and were made welcome as valuable acquisitions to the settlement. The party consisted of Israel Trumbo and family, William Baskins, Joe Kerr and Aaron Dow; the latter bringing the family of Mr. Trumbo. All here secured homes.

Israel Trumbo had a family of nine or ten children. He had previously visited the county and made a claim on section 16, Jefferson township, where he remained until about 1861, when he and his family removed to Dakota, where he and his wife have since died. He was a man of fair education, of good motives, genial, and popular. He was one of the first justices of the peace in Bremer county, and was the first surveyor.

Zachary's obituary claims he is the 4th cousin to George Washington. 4th cousins share common 3x great-grandparents. The lineage of the Washington family is well documented and George had no children. Similarly, Zachary's family can be traced back several generations and his 3x great-grandparents were born about the same time as George Washington. There are no shared great-grandparents and the connection to the Washington family cannot be proven.
