╰⊰✿ Robert Bob Leroy Sterling was the son of Percy and Elva Simpson Sterling, born on November 18, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana. When Bob was only 4 years old his father died from pnuemonia caused by carbon monoxide poisoning and cold temperatures. His mother never remarried and the family moved to Amelia, Ohio. Siblings are Lester, Mildred (Stockton), Bernice (Gee), and Donald. Elva had just had Donald only 9 months when Percy passed away, so Donald never really knew his father.
Bob joined the navy during WWII and was stationed in Gulf Port, Mississippi and played slide trombone in the navy band. His brother Lester was in the army stationed in Italy. Every night when Lester played taps on his trumpet both sides would stop fighting and everything would get quiet as they listened to him play. When he finished the fighting would resume. The ship Bob was on was just heading out of port to go fight when word came that the war was over, so the ship turned back around and entered port again.
While stationed in Mississippi Bob met and married his first wife Nancy Campbell. They had one daughter together, Elva Mae Sterling (Whitlock), born in 1947. Shortly after his release from the navy they moved to Amelia, Ohio. There he learned he had contracted TB while aboard the ship and he spent 5 years in the VA Hospital of Dayton, Ohio. During his stay in the hospital his first wife left him and abandoned their little girl whom family took in and cared for until Bob returned home.
Joanne Steinberger was a nurse at the hospital and introduced Bob to her sister Meriel Steinberger. After his hospital release Bob and Meriel were married.
Bob and Meriel settled into family life together and Meriel began raising and loving Elva Mae as her own child. Bob and Meriel had two daughters together.
Bob worked as an accountant. First for American Standard Plumbing until the company moved to Paintsville, Kentucky. In 1971 he became employed by Sawbrook Steel Casting where he worked until he retired early in 1992 due to health problems.
In December of 1993 the family moved to a village of Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1994 my dad battled prostate cancer. In February of 1999 he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in his right lung, his only good lung after his struggle with TB. He fought it with treatments, but lost the battle on November 9, 1999. My mom and I were at his side when he passed completely at Mercy Anderson Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Bob is loved and greatly missed by family and friends. May my dad now rest in the peace and love of God.
Note: Robert and Meriel Sterling had two miscarriages:
1) ❁Jonathan David Sterling, March, 1954, Fosters, Warren County, Ohio.
2) ❁Paul Daniel Sterling, September, 1959, Loveland, Warren County, Ohio.
